The Soothing Breeze of a Thriving Garden

A New Hope for Gardeners

A cold winter followed by a less than average growing season in 2024 has given way to a more promising year in 2025, and the Friends of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens Society (FOG) is optimistic about the prospects for the upcoming Spring Plant Sale. According to the FOG, the gardens are expecting a better year for gardeners, thanks to the mild temperatures and ample moisture characteristic of May. This perfect timing makes the Spring Plant Sale at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens an ideal place to start planning and preparing for the best garden ever.

A Fundraising Event of Note

The Spring Plant Sale, scheduled to take place on May 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., serves as a vital fundraiser for the non-profit community volunteer group. As the primary source of revenue for the FOG, the event plays a pivotal role in maintaining the gardens.

  1. Care and maintenance costs
  2. Drought management
  3. Renovation and conservation

are all funded through the proceeds of the Spring Plant Sale. By supporting the event, gardeners can contribute to the preservation and enhancement of these breathtaking natural spaces. The gardens themselves have undergone significant transformations over the years, driven by the dedication and hard work of the FOG. Since 1991, when Agriculture Canada โ€“ now Agriculture Agri-food Canada (AAFC) โ€“ phased out their horticulture program, the FOG has shouldered the responsibility of caring for the gardens.

A Showcase of Natural Beauty

The gardens have become a staple of the community in the South Okanagan, offering a unique blend of ornamental horticulture, natural landscapes, and heritage preservation. As the primary caretakers of the gardens, the FOG has worked tirelessly to maintain this treasure trove of natural beauty.

  • Butterfly/Pollinatorโ€™s Garden
  • Rose garden
  • Wildflower meadows

demonstrate the diversity of the gardens, which have been carefully crafted to showcase the beauty of nature.

Raising Awareness About Invasive Species

In addition to the plants on sale, the Spring Plant Sale will also feature educational stalls from the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society and Master Gardeners. These experts will be on site to answer any questions you may have and provide information on invasive plants, which threaten the delicate balance of ecosystems and require attention and action from the community.

A Variety of Plants to Suit All Needs

The Spring Plant Sale will boast an impressive array of plants, including roses, tomatoes, vegetables, and a wide range of perennials and annuals. Thanks to the addition of more greenhouse space, the variety of plants available is expected to be larger than ever before. In partnership with the Xen Nurseries, the FOG will offer a more extensive selection of plants, including rare and hardy varieties from the Summerland garden.

A Family-Friendly Event

The Spring Plant Sale promises to be a family-friendly event, with plenty of activities and attractions for gardeners of all ages. From Master Gardeners and experts on invasive species to plants galore, visitors will have a wealth of options to choose from.

This event will provide a unique opportunity for gardeners to connect with the community, learn from experts, and take home some fantastic plants to adorn their own gardens. As the FOG works tirelessly to preserve and maintain these stunning gardens, the Spring Plant Sale is a crucial step towards securing their future for generations to come.

Cultivating Community Engagement

At the heart of the FOG’s mission is community engagement, and the Spring Plant Sale is a prime example of this. By hosting events like this, the FOG fosters a sense of belonging among members and encourages community participation in the upkeep of the gardens.

This event will undoubtedly prove to be a success, with gardeners from across the region flocking to the Summerland Ornamental Gardens to pick up some great deals, learn about new plants and techniques, and get involved in preserving the beauty of the gardens.
