Exciting news for residents of Fort St. John! A new community garden is on the horizon, and it’s going to make a significant impact on the city’s appearance and health. The garden, located at 9803 87th Street, will provide volunteers with the opportunity to grow their own vegetables, plant flowers, and engage in various gardening activities.

  • Residents will have the chance to provide input on the garden’s design.
  • The garden will offer a community space for people to gather and connect.
  • Volunteers will be able to contribute to the garden’s maintenance and upkeep.
  • The garden will provide a sense of community and belonging for residents.

A piece of land was donated to FSJ Community Gardens, and the North Peace Community Garden Society has been leased the property for a 10-year term at the cost of one dollar. This partnership aims to enhance the city’s appearance and promote healthier living habits.

“The gardens are such a staple in our community,” said Ryan Harvey, the city’s communications manager. “They allow for local production of vegetables and food, not only for those who rent plots that may not be able to have a garden, but also they provide a lot of community space.”

The garden will be a great resource for residents, offering a peaceful and productive space for gardening enthusiasts. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for those who may not have a garden of their own to connect with the community and learn from one another.

Residents can provide their input on the garden’s design at the Garden Re-Design Public Input meeting, scheduled for April 28th at Northern Lights College. The meeting will take place in room 1502 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and no registration is required. Volunteers will also be able to learn more about how to get involved with the society throughout the season.

FSJ Community Gardens has been managed by the North Peace Community Garden Society since March 2024, with the goal of promoting local agriculture and sustainable living.

“It’s just really great to see local agricultural, small-scale stuff happening in our community,” said Harvey. “This partnership between the city and the North Peace Community Garden Society will be a huge success, and we’re excited to see what the future holds.”
