The Gardeners Guru

Introduction

Gardening is a great hobby, but it can also be frustrating. There are so many things to consider and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices for garden tools, plants, and accessories. We’ve put together this guide with everything you need to know about getting started with your very first garden!

One day I will have a garden (I hope) and it will be beautiful.

You don’t need a big garden to have a beautiful garden. In fact, you can have a beautiful garden on many different types of property, from brown roofs and balconies to potted plants or even containers.

Where to start?

The first step to starting a garden is finding the perfect space. Here are some things you should consider:

  • Sunlight
  • Dedication and time
  • Cost of supplies/tools you need to purchase
  • Accessibility

Lots of different tools and equipment.

You will need to buy a few tools and equipment before you start your garden. You can use the following list as a guide to choosing the right tools:

  • Shovel or spade – for digging holes for planting, removing weeds and soil amendments such as compost.
  • Pruners – for cutting back plants, deadheading flowers and harvesting fruit.
  • Weeding fork – for digging in soil around plants without disturbing them too much, weeding between plants, breaking up hard-packed dirt and aerating it at the same time. These forks have two tines (prongs) on one end of the handle which are used to remove weeds from their roots so that they don’t come back again!

What type of garden do you want?

Before you start planning, it’s important to decide what type of garden you want. For example, do you want a vegetable garden or an herb garden? A flower garden or an ornamental plant collection? Will the space be private or shared with neighbors and/or tenants?

Once you’ve decided on your preferences, consider what is possible in terms of location and maintenance level. Is there available soil space in your yard? Do all the plants need full sun exposure or can some be shaded by trees? Are there any pests that will bother certain types of plants more than others (such as ants for strawberries)?

Finally, think about how much time and effort will be required for maintenance. Some plants require frequent watering while others thrive when left alone. Do not forget to consider how often each plant may need weeding; if it is once per week then this could become quite time consuming.

Do I need planning permission?

You are not usually required to seek planning permission for the following activities:

  • Filling in a small hole in the ground with topsoil, turfs or other planting mixes.
  • Placing a tree or shrub on your land. You may need permission from your local council if you want to put up any structure around it such as fencing or a shed.

The life span of a garden.

The life span of a garden is an often overlooked aspect of gardening. A garden can be a very long term project, and it’s worth considering before you start. If you have the time and money to put into a large-scale project, then by all means plan ahead! But if your budget won’t allow for that kind of commitment, you may want to look at other options such as container gardening or having plants in pots around your house.

The rewards for hard work are endless with gardening—there’s nothing like getting up early on Saturday morning (or whenever) knowing that in just a few hours’ time, there’ll be fresh produce waiting for me in my kitchen! Besides being delicious and nutritious (and sometimes free), growing my own food allows me to feel connected with nature while also giving back some love from our beautiful planet itself.”

Sometimes you have to have patience because the best things take time, like gardens.

Patience is a virtue. My favorite saying is “good things come to those who wait” and it couldn’t be more true when it comes to gardening. In fact, some of the best things take time like gardens.

Sometimes you have to have patience because the best things take time, like gardens! Patience can be hard for me sometimes but I know that if I just keep doing my thing eventually it will pay off with beautiful results!
