Potting Bench- How to Make Your Own

Introduction

I am a self-professed DIYer. I love making things and I especially love to make my own potting bench. A potting bench is an essential tool for any gardener, and it doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult to make. Follow these steps to create your own potting station:

First make a list of the tools you will need.

Before you start, list the tools that you think you will need to create your potting bench. Keep in mind that not all of these tools are necessary, but they are helpful. You can find some of these tools at hardware stores and home improvement stores.

  • Sawhorses or sawhorse-like things
  • A workbench
  • A hammer (or other pounding thing)

Set your work bench up to fit your needs.

To get started, decide where you want your workbench. Is there enough room in your garage? Do you need more space than one corner? If so, consider a few other areas. A well-organized garden shed can be the perfect home base for all of your gardening accessories and supplies.

Make sure that when set up properly, the height of your bench is comfortable for standing and working on it with ease. You don’t want to have to bend down too much or strain yourself unnecessarily in order to use any tools lying around on top of it (which will inevitably happen). The last thing anyone wants after spending a hard day out in their garden is back pain from picking up something off of a low surface!

Use recycled materials whenever possible.

You can also recycle materials from other projects. For example, if you have a small piece of lumber that’s not long enough to make anything useful by itself but is too good to throw away, consider using it for your potting bench top. Another good source of reclaimed lumber is the trash bin at your local home improvement store. That’s right—you can get free wood by asking the employees if they have any scraps left over after cutting pieces for customers. They might even give you some free paint too!

Another option is to reuse items in your garage or attic that were originally intended for other purposes but are no longer needed. For example, if you happen to own a welder (or know someone who does), he or she might be able to use some old metal shelves as supports for the bottom shelf of your new potting bench project (like this one). Or maybe there’s an old bookshelf in your apartment that could be converted into storage space for pots and tools by adding shelves underneath it? It all depends on what materials are available and how creative you want to get!

Attach a power strip directly to the bench for convenience.

To make your own potting bench, you will need to attach a power strip directly to the work surface. This is necessary for convenience as well as organization.

Power strips allow you to plug in multiple tools and keep them organized. They are also helpful for preventing tripping over cords that hang from the bench top, so be sure that your power strip is designed for use on a workbench!

Make sure that your work table is sturdy and level.

Make sure that your work table is sturdy and level. It is important that the work surface be strong enough to support the weight of soil, pots and plants without being wobbly or unstable. If you have a large area in which to place your potting bench, then consider making the top of it larger than 24″ x 36″. You will also want to make sure that you don’t make it too heavy because you will not want to move it around very much. If you are working on a smaller scale, then make sure that your work surface isn’t too light—or else it won’t be able to support heavy pots full of soil.

Making your own potting bench will save you money and allow you to design it exactly how you want it.

Making your own potting bench will save you money and allow you to design it exactly how you want it. You can use what’s around the house, or buy new materials. It’s up to you!

I made my own potting bench out of plywood, 2x4s and some leftover lumber from another project (and I already had a few pieces of wood left over). The total cost for all the materials was less than $60.

I wanted a potting table with storage so that I could work on projects without having tools lying around all over my back yard. This is what we came up with:

Conclusion

With these easy tips, you can make your own potting bench. It will take some time, but it is worth it!
