Make a Planter Box for Roses or Herbs!

Introduction

Making a planter box is a great way to add greenery to your home, and it’s not hard at all. You’ll need some wood, nails and screws, and some basic tools like a saw and drill. We’re going to show you how to make this simple planter box that would be perfect for roses or any other type of plant!

Cut the 2×6 pieces to 36 inches.

Take the 4 2×6 boards that you have and use a miter saw to cut them into 36-inch pieces. A miter saw is a great tool for cutting 2x6s if you have one. If you don’t, it’s not a big deal; just make sure your cuts are straight and square so that the planter box will be strong. You could also use a table saw, circular saw or hand saw to do this step of the process!

De-nail the 2x6s if they are new.

If you are using new 2x6s, you will need to de-nail them. Use a hammer and nail puller to pry the nails out of the wood.

Be careful not to damage the wood while de-nailing it! Don’t use too much force or you’ll split the 2×6 into two pieces.

If your 2x6s are already used, there’s no need for this step—you can just screw them into place!

Construct the edges of the box.

To construct the edges of the box, nail two 2x6s to each side of the base. Use your nail gun to speed up the process, but you can also use a hammer and nails if you don’t have one. Be sure to use a level to make sure that both sides are straight and level with each other before driving in any nails.

Once this is done, use your saw to cut two pieces of 2×6 lumber into equal lengths so that they will fit snugly between two pieces already attached at 90 degrees from each other. Then repeat this process for all four sides of your planter box frame.

Place the side pieces on top of the base, aligning them with the base.

You’ll want to make sure that the edges of the side pieces are flush with the edges of your base, that they’re even with each other and that they’re level with each other. It’s also important to make sure your sides are square with each other.

This step can be difficult if you haven’t done much woodworking before, but there are some easy ways to align things as you go along. If you have a set square (or “carpenter’s square”) this will be helpful for checking that all four sides are still on 90-degree angles when it comes time for gluing them together.

Nail each side piece to the base, driving two nails in for each board.

To assemble the box, use a hammer and nails to fasten each side piece to the base. Drive two nails in for each board. Place one nail at each end of a board that will be attached to another board, so you can see how long it might take for you to finish building your planter box.

This is what I mean by “fastening”:
