DIY Bamboo Screen Door

Measure the door opening. The most important thing about this step is to measure accurately, so you don’t end up with a door that doesn’t fit.
Measure both width and height of your door, as well as its thickness (called “face” in some instances). You’ll also want to know how long it is once you have everything cut.
Use these measurements when cutting the bamboo according to Step 3 below:

Step 3. Assemble the bamboo pieces.

Assemble the bamboo pieces. You can do this step by hand with a hammer, but if you want to make it easier on yourself, use a nail gun or drill instead. A rubber mallet or small hammer will work fine for this part as well.

Step 4. Secure the bamboo pieces to the frame.

It’s time to secure the bamboo pieces to the frame. You have a few options for this step:

Staple gun
Nail gun
Hammer, screws and nails (or screw bits)
Drill with a drill bit that will fit through the holes in your bamboo pieces and into your door frame. If you don’t want to use power tools, you can use glue guns or glue sticks instead of staples or nails. You can also use a hot glue gun if it has enough strength to hold everything together while it dries. For extra durability, liquid nail can be applied around holes where screws will go through both sides of the doorframe (and into wall studs).

Step 5. Attach the door pulls, handles and/or towel rack.

It’s time to attach the door pulls!

To do this, you’ll need a screwdriver. Make sure that you have it handy.

First, put your hand on the frame of your door and look at where you want to put the handle or pull. You might have to move your hand around until it feels comfortable for where you want it to go.

Once you’ve found a good spot for it, use your screwdriver and hammer in one small nail into each corner of where the handle will be placed (see illustration). This will keep it from moving around when we attach our bamboo screen door frame in step 7 below. Next, take off any nails that are sticking out too far beyond the area where we will be attaching our handles/pulls so they don’t poke us while we work on this project later on!

Add a stencil or paint.

To add a design to your door, you can use a stencil or paint. For more intricate designs, I would suggest using a stencil and painting it in with a brush or roller.

The final step is to remove the tape slowly from both sides of your screen so that it doesn’t rip or leave marks on your door.

To prep the bamboo, soak it in water overnight, then let it dry before applying a sealant like teak oil.

Soak the bamboo in water for 24 hours. After it’s been soaking for that long, pull it out of the water and let it dry for 24 hours. This will ensure that your new screen door is properly sealed and ready to be used!

Once your bamboo is dry, apply a sealant like teak oil. You’ll want to apply this on both sides of your screen door because otherwise moisture can get trapped there and cause problems later down the line.

Once both sides have been coated with sealant, wait at least 24 hours before adding another coat (and preferably 48 hours). This will help with absorbency as well as prevent peeling or cracking later on due to over application or lack thereof respectively.”
