East 49th Street, A (1 of 1)

East 49th Street, A (1 of 1): By Manhattan standards this back yard is huge: eighteen feet by forty. Privacy couldn't be more of a challenge with neighbors on both sides, not to mention the arched but also immediately at hand windows of the projecting "garden room" of the house to the left). Young shrubs and a Japanese maple along the left side of the property will eventually create screening that's graceful for both parties. On the right, with more room, larger shrubs and clumping bamboo can do the job more quickly.
